A Message from the Founder

Hi there! I'm Alex Escorcio, the founder of Histochart. I started working on this project in (roughly) 2015. Over the years (and between other demands, distractions and adventures), I've restarted and reimagined this interactive historical atlas several times.

Throughout this slowly run course, I was repeatedly surprised (and often inspired) by the fact that a tool like Histochart had not yet been brought into existence by someone else.

It's all been something of a curious labor of love; I'm not a historian by any means, and as a product-maker I was never convinced anyone would pay too much attention to the existence of such a tool. Nevertheless, my odd goal remained: to build a tool that beautifully and accurately shows the evolution of borders throughout history, that grows to include a visualization of a wealth of significant historical events, and that has enough historical mapping functionality to serve in a wide variety of additional use-cases. Perhaps, like many others, I'm on a mad little personal quest to stitch a thread in the tapestry of history (someone please make me a Wiki page).

I'm excited to finally share Histochart with the world, and I look forward to seeing how it grows and evolves with contributions from users like you.

An Appeal to Historians and Cartographers

Please Help Us Improve Histochart.

Histochart aims to create the most accurate and comprehensive historical atlas available. But we can't do it alone. We need the expertise of historians and cartographers, both professional and amateur, to help us improve the quality of our border data (in the same way that Wikipedia relies on its community).

We at histochart have set up our databases with preliminary borders data for our beta release, but all of these are in want of serious refinement.

By contributing to Histochart, you have the chance to add your name (or username) to the annals of the great cartographers. Share your knowledge, help us refine our maps, and join a community of like-minded individuals passionate about history and geography.

Please share Histochart with friends and colleagues who might be interested. And don't hesitate to contact us for any reason – we'd love to hear from you.

Together, we can make Histochart an invaluable resource for everyone.
